Bonus Quiz 2

In noncyclic photophosphorylation, the electrons from photosystem I
- are picked up by NADP to form NADPH

Chemiosmosis is a significant process in both aerobic cellular respiration and photosynthesis because as it occurs, it
- generates ATP molecules

The pigment molecule at the center of photosystem whose electrons are excited by light energy is
- Chlorophyll A

In chloroplasts during photosynthesis, the glucose is produced in the
- Stroma

CAM and C4 pathways evolved to allow plants to
- Produce food in hot, dry climates.

Why does alcohol or lactate fermentation take place in some cells? (NOTE: I don't want what the processes are, but why they take place!) - Because of the lack of Oxygen.

Name the enzyme that mediates carbon fixation in the Calvin cycle.
Rubisco

What is the basic difference between substrate level and oxidative phosphorylation.
Oxidative makes more ATP than substrate-level through a much more significant oxidation of hydrogen ions through the ATP synthase pump.

Both cellular respiration and photorespiration have glucose as a reactant and carbon dioxide as a product. What is different about photorespiration?

In photorespiration, no ATP is being produced and available food energy (glucose) is being consumed. Thus no food and no energy = dead plant.

Why is it true that we can refer to the light dependent reaction as the "photooxidation of the chlorophyll"?
The light energy is used to knock the electrons away from the chlorophyll molecule into the Electron Transport Chain. Thus the light energy (photo) is oxidizing (removing electrons and their stored energy) from the chlorophyll.

Disclaimer: These are MY notes taken from classroom lectures while I'm in the classroom. While I'm perfectly happy to share my notes with my classmates and I know I take very good notes, you should still make every effort to attend the class and TAKE YOUR OWN NOTES. I will not transcribe everything the instructor says in the classroom, and I will NEVER post pre-exam reviews. My notes will not replace the value of actually attending class and taking your own class notes.I also cannot attest to their accuracy, other than they are what was provided in the lecture; you should not reference my notes as "expert opionion" by any means, and if you notice an error or omission, please do me the favor of e-mailing me with the correction and I will re-post my notes.
